The Banyamulenge people are an ethnic group primarily residing in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in the South Kivu province. The name "Mulenge" has a direct connection to the hills where the majority of the Banyamulenge have lived for generations. These hills, known as "Mulenge," have not only provided a distinctive geographical identity but have also lent their name to the people. "Banyamulenge" translates to "people of Mulenge," emphasizing their deep-rooted connection to this hilly terrain. This geographical origin has played a significant role in shaping their cultural identity and sense of belonging in the region. Today most of the Banyamulenge are Congolese refugees who have experienced displacement across various African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda, as well as South Africa, India, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.
The Banyamulenge Community Centre in Edmonton, AB, was established in April 2009 with a noble mission: to provide a welcoming space and inclusive opportunities for Banyamulenge immigrants and refugees in Edmonton. It aimed to create a place where these individuals and families could gather, connect, celebrate their cultural heritage, and seamlessly integrate into Canada's rich multicultural community, enabling them to thrive and sustain a healthy way of living. Back in 2009, the center started with just 3 families and a total of 10 Banyamulenge people in Edmonton. However, by 2023, it has grown exponentially, now boasting over 1000 members and continuing to expand. Most Banyamulenge arrive in Canada as refugees. The Banyamulenge Community Centre plays a crucial role in facilitating their integration and providing them with essential support in their new home.
